Your liver plays a vital role in balancing the chemical level in your blood. With over 500 functions, your liver helps to break down nutrients in your blood, metabolise drugs into non-toxic forms, and excrete bile which carries waste products away from the liver. The by-products your liver produces are either excreted into the bile, leaving the body as faeces, or blood, leaving the body as urine.

When your liver is not functioning properly, toxins can build up in your body and cause several symptoms including fatigue, nausea, jaundice, painful and swollen abdomen, swelling in the legs and ankle, bloody or black stools, etc.

When you report any of these symptoms to the doctor, you may be asked to carry out a liver function test.

A liver function test is a blood test measures the substances which your liver produce including enzymes, proteins, and by-products. Five primary tests that will be done in one panel includes liver enzymes, total protein, total bilirubin, LDH, and prothrombin time tests. These tests will help the doctor identify if you have a liver problem or need to run more tests.
